“Open with” Option Missing on Windows 10, how to fix it?

There are probably hundreds of applications downloaded on your computer and a hundred different ones that you can use to access them. For example, if you want to open an image on your computer, you can use Paint 3D, paint, gallery, photos, windows photo Viewer, etc. The “open with” option allows you to choose among all of these available alternatives. To conclude, in a single line, the “open with” tool connects the two.

Now there may be situations where the tool is missing. As a result, you now have to go to the specific application individually and then choose the file you want to open in the File menu. This is a long process and wastes both the time and effort of the users.

How to Fix or Restore the “Open with” Option in Windows 10?

Before proceeding with the process, it is advised that you keep a full back of the Windows Registry and create a system restore point beforehand. This will help you restore the previous settings in case something goes wrong.

Step 1: Open the Run command box by pressing Windows logo + R keys simultaneously on your computer.

Step 2: In the Run Command box, type regedit and hit Enter. This will open the Registry Editor on your screen.

Step 3: Now, type the following in the left side pane and press Enter:-

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Open With

Step 4: Click on the (Default) string and change its Value data. You will find it on the right-side pane, the “Open With” key. Set the following as the new Value data:-


Step 5: Click on OK.

Step 6: Close the Registry Editor window.

Step 7: Reboot your computer to apply the changes.

Once you are done with all the above steps, you should find the “open with” option in the context menu. You can access it by right-clicking on any folder.
