Open Source Disk Defragmentation mechanism for Windows: UltraDefrag

What is Defragmentation?

Defragmentation reduces the number of fragmented files on a hard drive and improves the overall performance of your computer. This process reorganizes and places related data files on your hard drive, such as programs, documents, music, videos, etc. Data is divided into multiple pieces and stored on a hard drive.

For your information, mechanical hard drives require defragmentation only because those discs spin. The heads can read and write data files. Furthermore, because SSDs have no moving parts, there is no need to defragment or defrag the SSD.

Regardless of which memory chip is in use, the computer can pick and choose which files it requires. Because of the reasons stated above, SSD is becoming more popular, and most new computers or notebooks come preinstalled with SSD. In Windows 10, you can also check whether your PC has a SATA or NVMe SSD.

UltraDefrag is a freeware application that defrags a computer or laptop’s hard drive quickly and effectively. To begin defragmentation with UltraDefrag, we must first analyze the hard disc by selecting Action >> Analyze from the toolbar. It familiarises you with the file distribution on the disc. It displays fragmented and compressed files, including the total number of files and folders.

Once the disc analysis is complete, you can proceed with the defragmentation process. Please keep in mind that it may take a few minutes to complete, and if there are many fragmented files, it may take a little longer. You will improve your system performance and optimize it by defragmenting it.

UltraDefrag includes an optimization feature that optimizes all complex disc files. This freeware tool, which is very popular these days, supports FAT, exFAT, and NTFS file systems.

UltraDefrag has a simple and user-friendly user interface that makes it simple to use, and it does not require any configurations. Installing and running it is as simple as installing and running other programs on your computer. It works equally well with both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms, including Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7.

For your information, in the NTFS file system, all file details are stored as metadata in the Master File Table, or MFT. UltraDefrag allows you to optimize this MFT for the best hard disc performance.
