How to Turn On or Off Automatic Bullets and Numbering in Word?

You can turn on or off automatically bullets and numbering in the word document. Generally, when you type an asterisk (*) or “1.” in a Microsoft Word document and tab on the keyboard, Word recognizes that you are trying to start a bulleted or numbered list. To avoid that behavior of Word, you can turn off automatic bullets and numbers by changing the setting.

How to Enable or Disable Automatic Bullets and Numbering in Word?

Do these steps to turn on or off automatic bullets and numbering in Word:-

Step 1. Open a Microsoft Word document on your Windows 11 or 10 PC.

Step 2. Hit the File menu in the ribbon.

Step 3. Pick Options in the left sidebar.

Step 4. Switch to the Proofing tab on the Word Options panel.

Step 5. Tap on the AutoCorrect Options button Word Options panel.

Step 6. Switch to the AutoFormat As You Type tab on the AutoCorrect dialog box.

Step 7. Under the “Apply as you type” section, uncheck the following checkboxes:-

  • Automatic bulleted lists.
  • Automatic numbered lists.

Step 8. At last, select the OK button.

After completing the above steps, Word will no longer use bullets or numbering when you type an asterisk (*) or “1.” in a Microsoft Word document and hit the spacebar or tab on the keyboard.
