When you double-click a folder in File Explorer or a folder in Windows 11 or 10, it opens in the same window by default. However, if you double-click a folder on your PC and it opens in a new window or its own folder window, this risewindows article will help you resolve the problem.

That can be demotivating if you open too many new windows while browsing through the folders. You may have manually changed the settings or a third-party application changed the behavior of opening folders in a separate window. Although the causes are numerous, a simple registry modification can resolve this issue.

How to Stop Folders from Opening in New Window on Windows 11 or 10?

Follow the below-illustrated steps to prevent folders from opening in a new window on Windows 11 or 10:-

Step 1. First of all, open File Explorer Options on your PC.

To do that, click on the Start button and type folder options. In the search results, click on the File Explorer Options to open the same.

Step 2. Then in the File Explorer Options, switch to the General tab.

Step 3. After that, select the “Open each folder in the same window” option under the “Browse folders” section.

Step 4. Then, click on the Apply button.

Step 5. Next, click on the OK button.

Step 6. Now, open the Registry Editor.

Step 7. After that, navigate to the following key in the left side of Registry Editor:-

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell

Step 8. Accordingly, on the opposite side of “shell,” double-click on the (Default) REZ_SZ and remove anything from the Value data field.Step 9. Then, click on the OK button.

Step 10. Next, browse to the following key in the left sidebar of Registry Editor:-

 HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\open

Step 11. Next, from the right side of “open” folder, look for the LaunchExplorerFlags REG_DWORD and right-click on it.Step 12. After that, select the Delete option in the menu.

Step 13. Now, click Yes when prompted.

Step 14. At last, reboot your computer to apply the changes.

When you have completed the preceding steps, double-clicking on a folder should no longer open it in a new window.
