Being a Microsoft Windows user, you might have created a Word document at some point. You might have seen that by default, it is allowed to number the pages of your document sequentially from the very first page. However, if the first page of your document is a preface page followed by the index page, you would want to number your pages from the one where the contents of your document start.

How to Insert Page Numbering from a Specific Page in Microsoft Word?

You must break the page first to number them from the desired location. Next, follow these steps:-

Step 1: Choose where you want to number the pages from and go to the end of the previous page. Let us suppose you want to number from page 3. For that, go to the end of the second page.

Step 2: Next, select Layout tab.

Step 3: Look for the Breaks button.

Step 4: Find the “Section Breaks” drop-down list. In it, select the Next Page option.

Step 5: Decide where you want to display the page number. After that, double-click on the chosen area (Header or Footer). Once you complete it, the “Design” tab will appear in the menu.

Step 6: Select the Link to Previous option to turn it off and un-link the header or footer from the previous section.

Step 7: The Word document will e split into two sections once you complete the steps above. Once done, place the cursor in the desired location (header/footer) on Page 3.

Step 8: Look for the Insert tab and go to the Page Number button.

Step 9: Use the drop-down list and choose your design.

Step 10: Once you select the design, the page numbers will number by default. If you want your pages numbered from 1, go to the menu and switch to the Insert tab. Once done, select the Page Number button, and click the Format Page Numbers option in the drop-down list.

Step 11: A dialog window on your screen says “Page Number Format.” Look for the Page Numbering section and click on the Start at radio button. After that, insert the page number you want to start at, and click on the OK button.
