How to Lock your Edge and Chrome browser with a Password on Windows 11 or 10?

You, as a Windows user might have installed an anti-virus at some point in time in order to protect your computer. Along with the overall protection of your computer, you might have wondered how you can keep your browsers protected. To password-protect the Edge and Chrome browsers, read this post. We will use a free extension called Browser Lock to help us secure our browser with a strong password even though neither Edge nor Chrome have a built-in option. Both Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge support this add-on for Browser Lock. Anyone who locks the browser cannot access any open tabs. To access the browser, you must type in the password you set.

In addition, the extension will prompt users to input the password to unlock the Edge or Chrome browser whenever they attempt to start a new window. You can enable this extension to operate in InPrivate mode to lock InPrivate windows if you want to browse the internet in that or incognito mode.

How to password-protect Edge browser?

Step 1: First, go to the Edge browser and find the microsoftedge.microsoft.com page to download and set up the Browser Lock extension.

Step 2: To download on your computer, click on the Get button.

Step 3: Click on the Add extension button in the dialogue box.

Step 4: The Edge browser will now open a new tab. Your email address and the password must be entered. To save the settings, click on the Save button at the end.

Step 5: You will see a pop-up message that says “Registration has been completed.”

Step 6: Click on OK.

Note: You can enable “Deep Security” here, which will lock your browser login after three unsuccessful login attempts for three minutes. You can choose the Dark Mode theme. It changes your password using a recovery email if you forget it at the primary login.You can also set “Clear History” features in this Add-on to remove the browser history after 3 wrong login attempts.

Step 7: Re-open the Edge browser after closing it. To access a webpage, Edge will ask you for your password. You can open the Edge browser once you enter the password.

Step 8: Select Browser Lock/Lock Your Browser from the menu that appears when you right-click on a webpage and choose to lock it immediately.

Step 9: The webpage will be secured immediately, and accessing it requires entering the password you set up in the previous step.

You can Lock or Unlock your Edge browser to prevent prying eyes by following the instructions above.

How to protect your Chrome browser with a password?

The Chrome Web Store also offers the Browser Lock add-on for the Chrome browser. Use this add-on to password-protect Google Chrome if that’s your favorite browser.

Step 1: Open the Chrome browser and go to the Chrome Web Store’s home page.

Step 2: To download and install the Browser Lock extension, click on the Add to Chrome button.

Step 3. A prompt window will now show up on your screen, click on the Add extension button.

Step 4: Once you have done it, the Browser Lock extension will be downloaded and automatically applied to the Chrome browser.

The Chrome browser is opened in a new tab where the primary password and email address are entered. Finally, enter your recovery email address and password before clicking the Save button to save your settings.

Note that every feature and choice is equivalent to its Edge extension. You can enable “Deep Security” here, which will lock your browser login after three unsuccessful login attempts for 3 minutes. The Dark Mode theme can be chosen that changes your password with the help of a recovery email if you forget it at the primary login. To delete the browser history after three unsuccessful login attempts, you can enable or disable the Clear History functionality in this Add-on.
