How to Extract Text from Pictures on Windows 11 or 10 using PowerToys?

As some of you might already know, it is an application with features that help you improve the Windows experience. Although you can try using it even if you’re a beginner, it was initially made for advanced users. It consists of several advanced functions like the color picker and OCR technology. The app includes a window manager, an image resizer, a bulk file rename tool, a keyboard manager to remap keys, etc.

Along with all the tools mentioned above, PowerToys version 0.62.0 and higher now has a “Text Extractor” that you can use to extract text from any image. This feature comes in handy several times. Say you want to fetch an address and some other information available on a piece of good you have. Just use the PowerToys Text Extract feature. It will get the same fetched out for you.

How to Install PowerToys on Windows 11 or 10?

It is an easy task to install PowerToys on your computer with the help of the winget command. Just use the following steps:-

Step 1: First, Open an elevated Command Prompt on your computer.

Step 2: Next, type out the following and press Enteron your keyboard:-

winget install --id Microsoft.PowerToys

Step 3: Once you press Enter, it will prompt you to agree to all the source agreement terms. To do that, you need to type Y on your keyboard, and press Enter.

With the above three steps, PowerToys will be installed and launched automatically.

How to Turn On Text Extractor on PowerToys?

Now that we have installed the application let us move on to the steps to enable the text extractor on it:-

Step 1: To begin, open the PowerToys app you have recently installed.

Step 2: You will find the Text Extractor option in the left sidebar. Click on it.

Step 3: Go to the Open Settings button.

Step 4: Lastly, in the window that pops up, turn on the toggle switch Enable Text Extractor.

You can disable the OCR(Optical Character Recognition) by turning off the toggle switch “Enable Text Extractor” in step 4.

How to Copy Text from Images on Windows 11 or 10 using PowerToys?

Use the following steps to extract the text from pictures or screenshots on Windows 11/10 through PowerToys:-

Step 1: First, launch PowerToys. Which you have installed earlier.

Step 2: Select the image you want to copy the text from.

Step 3: After you do that, use the key combination Windows + Shift + T.

Step 4: Next, select the text from your chosen image. It will automatically copy to the clipboard.

Step 5: Paste the copied text in the desired location in applications like Notepad, Microsoft Word document, etc.
