How to Create a “Windows to Go” version of Windows 11?

Microsoft discontinued the development of Windows To Go in 2019. It is no longer available with the operating system as of Windows 10 version 2004. But you can use Rufus to create a Windows to Go version of Windows 11 or 10.

Now that Windows 11 is out, you might be internally debating whether to make the leap, wait a bit for it to mature or stick with Windows 10 (or whatever OS you currently use) for the long haul. The decision is up to you, of course, but if you need help, you can test drive Windows 11 without committing to it on your primary system. One of the best ways to do that is to create a ‘Windows To Go’ USB flash drive.

It is made easy with Rufus, a handy image-burning utility that streamlines the process of creating a bootable USB drive. And this doesn’t have to be just for Windows 11, either; you could make a bootable USB flash drive based on any version of Windows. This risewindows guide will specifically show you how to create a “Windows to Go” version of Windows 11.

Step 11. At last, click OK to continue. Rufus will erase all the stored data and start copying the required files.

Once it is complete, you will see the progress bar. When the Status bar turns fully green, close the Rufus tool.

Finally, you are ready with a bootable USB flash drive; connect it to any PC where you want to open your portable Windows 11. Boot into your computer and select the USB drive.
