How to Create a Tree Diagram on Word?


Tree diagrams are visual representations of a series of events, showcasing a variety of outcomes based on different sequences of potential events. That’s where the “tree” part comes in; each possible path looks like a separate branch of the tree, which is why it’s called a “Tree Diagram.”

If you’re planning on making a tree diagram in Word 2016 or Word 2019, both part of their respective Office 365 software suites, SmartArt is the feature you’re looking for. Think of SmartArt as interactive, editable clip art that you can insert into your Word doc. A collection of tree diagram templates gives you plenty of options for making an organizational chart.

To start, click “Insert” on Word’s toolbar and click the “SmartArt” button to open a SmartArt graphic gallery. You can choose from more than 200 starting templates, including list charts, process charts, and hierarchy charts. In particular, the hierarchy charts are an excellent place to start a tree diagram. Select one and add text to each box on the graph by clicking the box, typing the text, and selecting “Enter.”

Because tree diagrams so efficiently deal with various possible outcomes, they come in handy when dealing with probability exercises. How to Make a Tree Diagram in Word?

You can make a tree diagram in MS Word and perform these steps:-

Step 1. First, open a new or existing Word document.

Step 2. Now, navigate to the page where you want the tree diagram to appear.

Step 3. Then, click on the Insert tab in the menu bar.

Step 4. After that, click on the Insert a SmartArt Graphic button in the Illustrations group to open the “Choose a SmartArt Graphic” dialog.

Step 5. Next, you can choose one from several pre-designed SmartArts to make a tree diagram; Y can select one from List, Process, Cycle, Hierarchy, Relationship, Matrix, Pyramid, or Picture. Then, click the OK button.

Step 6. A pop-up window will appear on the screen where you can type your desired text. So, click on the [Text] and type the selected word. Once the text is entered, you can see a preview on your Word document.

Step 7. So, when editing is done, close the “Type your text here” dialog box by clicking the x icon.

Step 8. After that, please select it and right-click on the shape in the diagram to add more shapes to any shape. Here, hover the mouse cursor on Add Shape in the menu that appears. So, you will find the following options:-

Add Shape After –  You can add a new shape after the selected shape.
Add Shape Before –  Before the selected shape, adds a new shape.
Add Shape Above – used to add a new shape above the selected shape.
Add Shape Below – Adds a new shape below the selected shape.

Step 9. After adding the desired shape in the pop-up window, enter the text that you want to appear in shape.

Finally, the tree diagram is now complete.
